2012: A Year of Change
[ FINZfeatures] _ Twenty-twelve is shaping-up as a year of change, particularly on the retail front, as three of New Zealand’s leading designer fashion brands bid farewell to High Street and prepare to relocate their long-established flagship stores to Britomart, Auckland’s new luxury precinct.
Early next month, Kate Sylvester, WORLD and Zambesi will make the relatively short yet significant move downtown to the Seafarers Building on Tyler Street, leaving behind them “rising rents” and “the lack of foresight by landlords” who “maybe didn’t notice what the reality of retail is at the moment”, as reported by the NZ Herald.

2011 AUT Rookie Show
BY MAPIHI OPAI
[EVENTS] _ The 2011 AUT Rookie Show, held this evening at Shed 10 on Queens Wharf, was the best to date. This time they upped the ante with A-grade production values and a curated programme; not every graduate made it to the runway. It's a ballsy move that will have its detractors no doubt, but one that finds favour with industry, because the front row resembled something from Fashion Week.

Designer, James Dobson, drew inspiration from the album covers of Norwegian ‘black metal', which, I am told, is not to be confused with ‘death metal’. Aesthetically speaking, the former boasts a highly artistic and futuristic thread, while the latter is decidedly gauche.

With 62 percent of New Zealand business owners now aged 50-and-over, and 45 percent looking to sell in the near future, there's a huge need for effective succession planning. But, only 11 percent have a strategy for exiting their businesses.
"Basically, if you don't get it right, you don't have the level of security in retirement that you would hope for. Without effective planning, you won't realise the real value of the business."

Fashion News: Most Influential Fashion Blogs of 2010
Fashion Industry New Zealand (FINZ)
Style 99 started with an index of more than 500 fashion and beauty blogs from around the world. After eliminating the ones that were abandoned or updated infrequently, they calculated data, did some math and assigned a score representative of content quality, popularity and general buzz.
The end result is a list of the most influential blogs that spans multiple categories; from the street style of trendsetters around the world, to a behind the scenes look at the people who create and shape the fashion industry. And, of course, the bloggers who stay on top of who's wearing what.

Business News: The Unpredictability of Gen-Y (video)
Fashion Industry New Zealand (FINZ)
In 2010, a huge amount of energy and research went into tapping the hearts and minds of Gen-Y consumers. This video shows 13-year old blogging sensation and founder of TheStyleRookie.com, Tavi Gevinson, presenting her thoughts on Gen-Y at the L2 Generation Next Forum.
“Edgy is a term created by middle-aged, middle-brow people who try to say that they’re doing something really dangerous. But, really they’re just marketing a product that came out of lots of research and meetings,” says Gevinson.

Intellectual Property: ACTA Negotiators Finalise Treaty Text
Fashion Industry New Zealand (FINZ)
By Claire Deeks / Senior Associate, James & Wells
After three years of negotiations, international agreement was reached on the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). It appears that, for most of the countries involved in ACTA (including New Zealand), its immediate effect will be minimal. That said, ACTA will provide a standard for undeveloped and/or developing nations and is likely to provide a useful framework for additional progress in international co-operation in anti-counterfeiting enforcement.

Business Growth: The Importance of Exporting
By Andrew Sayers / Principal, WHK
With the onset of the Global Financial Crisis, a significant number of New Zealand businesses have been looking to export opportunities. For the fashion industry, exporting gives businesses the opportunity to showcase their labels on the international stage and grow their revenue. Over the last decade, the value of fashion exports have averaged a total of NZ$230.6 million per year.

The sell-out show attracted a 1000-strong audience. What’s more, it was great to see the front rows packed with industry, media and sponsors. I suspect that AUT has benefitted from staging the event at New Zealand Fashion Week in previous years, because the production values were top-notch and this year’s graduates didn’t fail to deliver.

And, could it be told over 30 years without boring the rest of us?”

Features: The Death of Fashion?
|
By Mapihi Opai / Executive Officer, FINZ
There’s been a lot of speculation about the impending death of fast-fashion, due to rising production costs, a major shift in consumer sentiment and shortfall in creativity. But, I wonder whether the industry’s main casualty is something far more distinguished, namely fashion itself.
I’m reminded of a FINZ lecture, where visiting Swedish academic, Dr Otto von Busch, discussed how elitism and the industry’s time-honoured hierarchy is being challenged by the emergence of the ‘global fashion bazaar’; a flat system, where democracy reigns and inspiration comes from all places at once.

Students from Otago Polytechnic have launched commercial product designs as the result of a collaborative 12-week project with Dunedin’s Port Chalmers Design Store. Given a budget of NZ$400, two groups of second-year students were asked to design, manufacture and brand a collection of items in time for Christmas.
Machiko Niimi, design lecturer at Otago Polytechnic, says the project is the only one of its kind in New Zealand and provides students with an opportunity to experience the realities of being a design professional.
