Talking About Export

[FINZbusiness] _ This week, we spent two days in the boardroom at New Zealand Trade & Enterprise with select apparel and accessories companies discussing export to Australia as part of the Path to Market programme, facilitated by FINZ, which will see the group travel to Melbourne next month. As exporters we need to think strategically, look beyond fashion and understand the broader market opportunities. The premise behind the iPod? MP3 player as jewellery. It isn’t just about making frocks anymore.

2012: A Year of Change
[FINZfeatures] _ Twenty-twelve is shaping-up as a year of change, particularly on the retail front, as three of New Zealand’s leading designer fashion brands bid farewell to High Street and prepare to relocate their long-established flagship stores to Britomart, Auckland’s new luxury precinct.
Early next month, Kate Sylvester, WORLD and Zambesi will make the relatively short yet significant move downtown to the Seafarers Building on Tyler Street, leaving behind them “rising rents” and “the lack of foresight by landlords” who “maybe didn’t notice what the reality of retail is at the moment”, as reported by the NZ Herald.

Intellectual Property: ACTA Negotiators Finalise Treaty Text

Fashion Industry New Zealand (FINZ)
By Claire Deeks / Senior Associate, James & Wells

After three years of negotiations, international agreement was reached on the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). It appears that, for most of the countries involved in ACTA (including New Zealand), its immediate effect will be minimal. That said, ACTA will provide a standard for undeveloped and/or developing nations and is likely to provide a useful framework for additional progress in international co-operation in anti-counterfeiting enforcement.

Features: The Price of Progress
By Cushla Reed / FINZ Board Member / Director, Minx Footwear

China is changing at a faster pace than most of us expected and it feels as though my business has been hit by difficulties with offshore production overnight. However, in reality, the issues at hand have been building up over the past eight months. The lead times for sampling in China have gone from four-to-six weeks, to six-to-eight weeks. Production delivery dates are tracking a month behind target. Minimums are inching upwards. And, we’re seeing inflation, as factories increase wages in an effort to retain staff.

China Free Trade Tariff Reductions (NZ Importers Institute)
From January 1, 2011, duty rates will be marginally lower for Chinese manufactured goods imported direct from the region. The reduction schedule is complicated, given that separate tariffs have been applied to individual items. But, the NZ Importers Institute has put together a very handy duty reduction calendar for Kiwi ragtraders.

Importers Bite Bullet on China Price Increase (Textile Source)
According to an Asian retail logistics specialist, not a single country in the world is poised to present a viable and reliable alternative supply source to China in the near future. This opinion comes as Chinese factories are faced with an inability to meet production demand, resulting in smaller orders being abandoned. And, Chinese factories would rather sell to local companies.

Features: The Death of Fashion?
By Mapihi Opai / Executive Officer, FINZ

There’s been a lot of speculation about the impending death of fast-fashion, due to rising production costs, a major shift in consumer sentiment and shortfall in creativity. But, I wonder whether the industry’s main casualty is something far more distinguished, namely fashion itself.

I’m reminded of a FINZ lecture, where visiting Swedish academic, Dr Otto von Busch, discussed how elitism and the industry’s time-honoured hierarchy is being challenged by the emergence of the ‘global fashion bazaar’; a flat system, where democracy reigns and inspiration comes from all places at once.

Business Growth: Learning to Run Again
By Paul Millet / WHK

How does your profit compare to what it was five years ago? Your profit margin trend is the single most powerful indicator of your company's health and value. As margins are squeezed, businesses tend to cut their sales and marketing efforts. Manufacturers postpone plant upgrades and delay research and development. This helps in the short term, but it also reduces business fitness, capability and memory.

The Big Business of Being Fabulous(Business Day)
Behind the glamour, gloss and fabulous clothes, New Zealand Fashion Week is serious business ... Fashion Industry New Zealand (FINZ) undertook its own research last year to try and quantify the value of New Zealand designed garments exported direct from overseas manufacturing hubs to international markets. Just three of New Zealand’s “heavy hitters” reported export sales of NZ$240m for the last financial year in this unmeasured category; more than the total garment exports officially recorded in 2009.

Hells Angels File Suit against Alexander McQueen - (L.A Times)
In decades past, the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club settled disputes the old-fashioned way, with a swift kick in the groin or a punch in the face to the offending party.

On Monday, the outlaw club opted for a more civilised action. It filed a lawsuit against the designer fashion label Alexander McQueen, along with retailers Saks Fifth Avenue and Zappos, claiming they illegally sold McQueen items that use the trademarked Hells Angels name.

Sustainability: Eco Fashion

Fashion Industry New Zealand (FINZ)

One of the strongest global trends in design is the expression of ecological, social and community consciousness. And, it’s moving upscale; from organic cotton t-shirts and hippy drawstring pants, to high fashion.

Exploding the myth that sustainable design is bad design, or at best basic design, Eco Fashion highlights the brands producing desirable and well-designed fashion, and accessories with a conscious.

Fashion Education: Partnership Delivers Commercial Designs

Fashion Industry New Zealand (FINZ)

Students from Otago Polytechnic have launched commercial product designs as the result of a collaborative 12-week project with Dunedin’s Port Chalmers Design Store. Given a budget of NZ$400, two groups of second-year students were asked to design, manufacture and brand a collection of items in time for Christmas.

Machiko Niimi, design lecturer at Otago Polytechnic, says the project is the only one of its kind in New Zealand and provides students with an opportunity to experience the realities of being a design professional.

FINZ Benefits: Advice and Mentoring

Fashion Industry New Zealand (FINZ)

Industry-specific advice and mentoring is worth its weight in gold. And, it’s something we offer our members free of charge. Our board and mentors collectively boast a huge amount of professional experience and expertise, which they’re willing to share.

FINZ mentoring is informal, but entirely invaluable. You set the pace, duration and objectives; we put you in touch with the people in the know. We might work with you on branding in February and a business plan in July. It’s all about you and the specific needs of your business.

NB: FINZ mentoring is not currently available to Student Members.

FINZ Benefits: Industry Networking

The business of fashion is hard work. We’re all time starved; scrambling like crazy to find more hours in the day and achieve some semblance of ‘work-life’ balance. Nowadays, it’s getting harder to have conversations face-to-face, as opposed to online.

Each season, FINZ hosts ‘Social Drinks’ in association with Charles Parsons. These fashion shindigs regularly attract around 200 people; providing a great opportunity for our members to do a spot of informal networking and catch-up on the news of the hour, with other industry insiders.

NB: FINZ Networking is not currently available to Student Members.

FINZ Benefits: Events & Activities

Fashion Industry New Zealand (FINZ)

FINZ is a lean, mean, activity-focused organisation that derives income solely from satisfied customers; our members and family of corporate partners. We pride ourselves on delivering a full schedule of industry-specific events and activities throughout the year.

Our annual calendar includes a full conference, seminars, workshops, lectures, networking functions and an export scholarship. This year, we’re also adding an exhibition and targeted industry research to the line-up.

Our members benefit from either discounted ticket prices or free entry to all FINZ events.
